The Shimabara Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Geopark in Kyushu's western side, was formed by the activity of the Unzen Volcano, which has erupted three times in history, with its most notable eruption dating back to 1991.
Visitors can learn about the resilience of local people who have adapted to the volcano's activity and explore the blessings of the land, including the Unzen hot springs, with tours offering a wide range of experiences.

Discover life shaped by Unzen Volcano's power on the Shimabara Peninsula.
  • Day1
The journey starts at Unzen Hell, where visitors will learn about the origin of the Shimabara Peninsula and can admire the breathtaking geothermal energy, followed by a 1.5km walk around the area for about 90 minutes.
  • Day2
Trek 5.1 km to Mt. Kusenbu, one of Unzen's 'Three Peaks,' enjoy the stunning views, experience its historical significance, and savor a packed lunch and local dishes prepared by your guide before descending back to Unzen Onsen District for a relaxing afternoon.
  • Day3
Trek 4.3 km through the highlights of Unzen's 'Three Peaks,' climbing Mt. Myoken and Mt. Kunimi for the stunning views, exploring the bare landscapes of Heisei-shinzan, enjoying a lunch sitting by the active fumaroles, and finishing with a climb up Mt. Fugen before returning to Unzen Hot Springs District.
  • Day4
On the final day, enjoy a 24.5 km downhill cycling tour from Unzen Onsen District, through potato fields and terraced landscapes on the Shimabara Peninsula, ending around noon at Kunisaki Peninsula from where you'll be able to gaze upon both the mountains and Tachibana Bay.
